Petition: Objection to Truman Brewery Restaurants Applications

Petition summary and background

Deadline for signatures: Tuesday 6th December 2011 @ 12 noon

Truman’s have submitted 6 planning applications for change of use, of Old Brewery units currently used for retail or other purposes, to Restaurant use.  If accepted by LBTH, they will comprise 230 covers in 5 new restaurants, across 961m2, including external seating areas.  Opening hours for all restaurants are: 0900- 2300 Sun – Thurs/Fri, and 0900 – 2400 Fri/Sat.

The change of use would clearly have a negative impact on residents in surrounding streets, of noise, drunkenness, rowdy behaviour and ASB.  Additional restaurants will increase the cumulative effect of the existing concentration of night time economy uses within the immediate and wider vicinity.

The operating hours are unreasonable and should be reduced to 2230 Sun – Thurs, and to 2300 Fri and Sat, to reduce disturbance to neighbouring residents.  Brewery patrons causing problems in Wilkes and Woodseer Streets, for example, is already well documented by police and residents.

LBTH and Trumans need to implement measures to mitigate the negative effects of the night time economy in the area, such as:

  • Increased toilet facilities
  • Funding policing of the area
  • Provision of security staff to ensure quiet and effective dispersal of patrons late in the evening
  • Improved cleaning of the vicinity
